Publication on Rett syndrome

Dear Friends,

we would like to offer you our publication on Rett syndrome, which we put together on the basis of our experiences from teaching these girls. It contains basic information on the syndrome, describes developmental possibilities, lists the methods of and approaches to teaching girls with this serious illness, and also includes case studies. Special attention is paid to developing the communications skills of children with Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome in the Czech Republic is an under-diagnosed condition: the expected number of girls and women with Rett syndrome should be around 243 to 534, but only 59 girls and women with the syndrome are registered nationwide (Laboratory for the Study of Mitochondrial Disorders at the 1st Medical Faculty of Charles University and Prague General University Hospital), says Dr. A. Zumrová, Ph.D. of the children’s neurological clinic at the 2nd Medical Faculty of Charles University and Motol University Hospital.
Every year, some 6-10 girls are born with Rett syndrome. Many parents remain uninformed regarding the details of this illness and the possibilities for their child’s development. In view of the fact that in recent years our school has been attended by seven girls with Rett syndrome and we are in contact with several others, we decided to share our experiences with other parents and teachers who are confronted with this issue.

We will gladly send the publication by mail or you can pick it up in person at the Zahrádka Primary School (U Zásobní zahrady 8, Prague 3, www.zszahradka.cz). The publication’s price is CZK 85 plus postage.

Sincerely.
Dagmar Rosecká
Director, Zahrádka Primary School
